First things first: Why "Ur Mom"?
Because we play music your mom would like, if she were ultra cool. And because two of us teach middle school...AND because it sounds so much better than “three old ladies who sing and play awesome music!”

First things first: Why "Ur Mom"?
Because we play music your mom would like, if she were ultra cool. And because two of us teach middle school...AND because it sounds so much better than “three old ladies who sing and play awesome music!”

A little history:
The band - Heather Ayers, Lynn Kunstman and Leslie Phillips - spun off from another project that Lynn and Heather were doing, another trio called Kahely. Lynn and Heather had done a little singing and playing together years ago, and somehow drifted apart. Kahely brought them back together. However, the two had a different vision and direction than what Kahely was doing, so they started their own project, Ur Mom. Problem was, they needed another instrumentalist/vocalist, and found Leslie. Or perhaps we should say that fate brought Leslie to us!

All three women sing lead, depending on the song. And all contribute to the harmony. Leslie plays guitar; Lynn sings and adds a little rhythm with tambourine, shaker, spoons and kazoo; and Heather plays guitar, mandolin/mandola, and cajon and other hand percussion (not all at the same time!) She's been known to play a little harmonica, and is even dabbling with bass.

The music is really all about the vocals and the harmony, and the instruments are there to lend support to that. Ur Mom’s genre...tough to categorize, so “eclectic acoustic folk-rock-blues-country-soul” probably works. The band covers songs from the last fifty years, maybe more. We cover songs from Dylan to Def Leppard, Eagles to Elvis, Creedence to Sam Cook, Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, Sara Jarosz, John Hiatt, Patty Smith, the Wailin Jenny’s and the Indigo Girls - to name just a few! If it sounds good, and particularly if it offers the potential for three part harmony, Ur Mom will cover it.
