Two musicians, two countries, two instruments and all together 25 strings!

Rydvall/Mjelva is an unusual and inspired duo collaboration between two folk musicians, one Swedish and one Norwegian. Erik Rydvall on keyed fiddle and Olav Luksengård Mjelva on Hardanger fiddle are both among the foremost folk musicians of their generation. Two inquisitive musicians with solid roots in their own traditions. The repertoires and performance styles of these two instruments are fundamentally very different, but these two musicians manage to make the combination sound both natural and intriguing. The music is evocative, catchy and danceable, and their collaboration really makes the sparks fly. The Hardanger fiddle and the keyed fiddle have rarely been played together in a duo format. Their debut album was released to critical acclaim in 2013 and was awarded with the Norwegian Folkelarm prize.

Erik Rydvall comes from Västerbotten, and studied keyed fiddle performance at the Eric Sahlström Institute in Tobo and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. In recent years he has been acknowledged as one of the leading young keyed fiddle players, and he is renowned for his energy and virtuosity. Erik plays with the prize-winning folk music trio Nordic, among others.

Olav Luksengård Mjelva, from Røros, is one of Norway’s most active fiddlers. He was awarded the ”Folk musician of the year” prize in Norway in 2013. He is a founding member of both the Norwegian-Swedish group SVER and the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc and he also plays with several other projects. In 2010 Olav was awarded a Spelemannspris (Norwegian Grammy) for his first solo album, and in 2011 he received another Spelemannspris as a member of the Unni Boksasp Ensemble. He is a highly sought-after studio musician, and has contributed to well over 30 recordings. He is also a popular course leader and dance musician in Norway and abroad.
