  • diane-cluck: Ah, Merwin. Okay. Will give a look.
  • ecstaticmd: i'm @gardenovena on instagram if yall wanna stay connected
  • ecstaticmd: <3
  • diane-cluck: Thank all y'all !!! <3
  • actumen: He passed away recently, there are a lot of tributes flying around. His "Essential W.S. Merlin" on Copper Canyon is a great start
  • mnemosine.v1.0: Thank you and goodnight!
  • actumen: merwin. Darn autocorrect
  • turingtape: I think you might like Pierre Reverdy, Diane!
  • actumen: banks again and goodnight!
  • Keval: Thank you! So much love to you x x x
  • ecstaticmd: also if you are interested in women who have been revolutionary to musical culture, this is a thing I am doing: awomanadaytilbikinikillinla.home.blog
  • michael landucci: great show thanks!
  • arikjoshua: love it!!!
  • diane-cluck: Thank you! Can still read everyone's messages post-concert. Wishing you all lots of Love.
  • bsosdian: A sweet 90 minutes! Thank you, Diane!!
  • pleasantsandpipers: The second voice memo idea (#93 i think!) might work well as a coda or somewhere within with "Know how to use your power" that you sang with David Garland!
  • diane-cluck: Hi...in response to "why no 'king of flaming faggots'...
  • diane-cluck: I've felt not great about singing that line lately. In my 20s I found it really clever that 'flaming faggots' means 'burning stick' but me now really wants to be a little more conscious of throwing that word around in a song where the meaning
  • diane-cluck: be misinterpreted and hurt someone.
  • diane-cluck: Good catch, anyhow, ecstaticmd!
  • arikjoshua: ive noticed in earlier versions of "power of allowing" the line was "dance around in a pretty dress" and recently its been "dance around".
  • arikjoshua: any reason? just more gender inclusive?
  • ecstaticmd: yeah i've just noticed the language of your songs changing over time so was interested :) also the lyrics about cock in "draw me out." i've paid very close attention to you for like idk 15 years so i have definitely noticed a shift away from more....
  • ecstaticmd: risque or potentially controversial language
  • diane-cluck: I never really liked "dance around in a pretty dress", tbh. It seemed to just be filling a rhyme scheme, which I think is lazy songwriting :)
  • ecstaticmd: to me you have always had a strong queer presence as a songwriter, so it was obvious you didn't mean "faggot" in a mean way, but yes, it is difficult to know how other people will interpret you and your meanings
  • arikjoshua: <3
  • diane-cluck: If it stops with "dance around", there's literally a moment to dance around before lyrics come back in.
  • ecstaticmd: :)
  • ecstaticmd: obvsly they are your songs so you should sing them in the way that feels right to you as you and they evolve. i like watching songwriters evolve and rewrite their songs
  • diane-cluck: I hear you, and you're right about content. Currently/personally for me I question the need to 'shock' in conventional ways. I'm more looking for songs to be nuanced awakenings for a listener to interact with on a personal level.
  • diane-cluck: So, yeah, some of those previous lyrics are sidelined at the moment.
  • diane-cluck: Anyhow...I go now into the sunny evening. Thank you, all! A real joy to engage with you as thoughtful listeners.
  • pleasantsandpipers: Wishing you and everyone an incredible UK tour!! i will be asking for Casting About lyrics artwork sometime soon after!
  • ecstaticmd: Oh yeah I agree with you. So many examples of artists using language to shock in ways that are deeply problematic and also just kind of lazy songwriting. Was writing about Patti Smith the other day and had to contend with that aspect of her
  • ecstaticmd: I'm signing off. Thanks for a lovely time, all <3

Thank you!! I was hoping to hear Unconscious Repeat and am very pleased that you wanted to play it!! It is wonderful to hear you create these songs live more often, it is almost ten years since I first saw your concert , but I have only been to one more concert in person since then. Now the experiences are really starting to add together into new feelings of learning, growing, and togetherness!!

Impromptu phone memo songs or Diane talking about the uncredited songwriters of African American folk and blues songs and giving them credit on "Sandy Ree"
