Welcome to one of America's best known small venues! Thanks for welcoming us into your living room tonight.

The Library of Congress calls Caffè Lena "An American treasure," and we have been recognized by The GRAMMY Foundation for our important contributions to the development of American music.

First built as a boarding house and then converted to a woodworking shop, the 2nd floor of 47 Phila Street became a folk club in 1960 operated by Lena and Bill Spencer. The Caffé's early years were entwined with the social movements of that era. Emerging artists such as Bob Dylan and Tom Paxton, The Freedom Singers, Arlo Guthrie, Emmylou Harris and Don McLean took their turn on the stage, alongside esteemed veterans such as Clarence Ashley, Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James and Pete Seeger.

Caffe Lena is beautiful and energized these days thanks to a top to bottom donor-funded renovation completed at the end of 2016. The renovation rebuilt the bones of the building, enabled 100% handicap-accessibility to our second floor performance space, and led to a rebirth of programming. We are now able to deliver a listening experience in line with our international reputation in a community gathering space that is inspiring and inclusive.

The Caffè Lena you see today operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supported by concert revenue, private and corporate donors, grants and bequests, and an ever-evolving team of volunteers.

Your Tips help support our diverse and impressive concert schedule, free and low-cost musical jams, poetry and storytelling open mics, children’s concerts, record parties, and daily events that inspire creativity, fellowship and engagement.
