Launching their musical association as a vocal harmony rich duo back in high school, Dan DeCristofaro (keys, guitar, vocals) and Ethan Bates (bass, cello, vocals) are the founders of the dynamic, soul driven alt pop band Blue Light Bandits.

Over the years, as they expanded to a trio (with drummer Mike Braz, who also makes beats and plays guitar) and now a quartet with the addition of electric guitarist Tim Clark, they have played numerous clubs, bars and restaurants in their hometown – and have also played in Boston and Providence, as well as Syracuse, where they opened for Badfish at the Westcott Theatre. They are currently releasing their new 7 song EP. The BLB Demo, whose title is a playful misnomer since it’s a fully produced set capturing their dynamic multi-faceted sound.

But as Dan relates the story, he and Ethan’s most profound “band moment” happened in the summer of 2009, on a night they played their first private party, a family reunion in York Beach, Maine. They were sitting on the beach when they realized that there was truly something incredible about driving this long distance to perform the music they loved. Taking in the beautiful scene they saw a blue light shining across the water and the idea for the band name just hit them – as if there was something powerful about having the opportunity to steal such moments. They needed a name for the fledgling duo, and Blue Light Bandits stuck. Now every year on August 5, Dan and Ethan trek up to that very spot to commemorate the official start of their musical venture.

Their longtime online bio says that Blue Light Bandits is made up of a group of men with soul – a reference to their ability to emotionally connect to each other and their fans as much as to the R&B flavors present in their music. But the excitement in their sound comes from their adventurous blend of influences that truly transcends genres. They’re grounded in bluesy rock but there are elements of reggae, funk and indie rock – all tied together with an infectious, relatable “poppiness.” They recently settled on “alt pop” as an essential descriptor, but that’s just the starting point – and the band continues to evolve. Collectively, Dan and Ethan – who first met in a music theory class, which led to an impromptu jam session at Dan’s house - say, “We’ve spent many years sharing and indulging in music that inspires and fulfilled us on the deepest level, all of which reminds us that we are just at the beginning of what we hope to accomplish.”

On most of their songs, Dan takes the lead vocal and Ethan adds harmonies – the one major exception being the beachy, acoustic driven love song “So Mine,” featuring Ethan’s charismatic lead voice. Other songs include “Lonely,” the first song the two ever wrote together (and very much based in the romantically longing halls of high school); “Sarah,” an easy grooving tune about Dan’s crush on a charming bartender; and “What I Have Is What You Need” (featured as a bonus track), a funky head-banger that was the band’s first song to be featured on local Boston radio in the summer of 2013.

“We all share the same obsession,” Dan says, “so we have a blast hanging around each other. All of us have our own unique musical signature that developed from our individual learning experiences growing up. It's our passion for music and our ability to learn from one another that has allowed us to mesh together into one eclectic, yet unified sound. We are all constantly searching for new inspirations, challenging each other to play outside of our comfort zones, and growing together as brothers. This allows us to incorporate the creative abilities of every member and put them together into a refreshing blend. We believe our new songs exemplify the variety of inspirations that have fueled the latest collection of tunes. The new EP really shows our energy and our growth as a young, aspiring band.”
