Kristen Lee Sergeant's sonic home is jazz, one she found after training and performing both classical and theatrical styles. The sound of her homecoming is fresh, inventive, and reflects a passion for the lyric and a dramatic sense imbued by her stage history.
Kristen moved to New York City from Boston with theatrical aspirations, but soon found herself enamored by the intimacy of cabaret, and soon thereafter fell ‘down the rabbit hole’, as she likes to say, into the world of jazz. She sang for a big band for several years, and gradually tapered off her stage work to fully dedicate herself to this music. Through intensive study with critically acclaimed composer and vocalist Tom Lellis, she started writing original arrangements and songs, further developing a taste and sound that’s truly unique.
Her soon to be released debut record, “Inside Out” is a deeply personal statement of jazz standards and inventive takes of pop songs from the 1980’s, and features an original poem.
Kristen’s musical collaborators past and present are esteemed and essential: The album’s producer, Suzi Reynolds, is a force in the jazz community (currently representing Freddy Cole and Rufus Reid) and also her manager and mentor on this journey. The versatile and incredible David Budway (Mark Murphy, Liza Minelli) is her most frequent collaborator and musical director for “Inside Out”. Other talents Kristen works with include: Neal Caine (Harry Connick, Jr., Betty Carter), Valery Ponomarev (Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers), Jeb Patton (The Heath Brothers), Jon Davis (Stan Getz, Anat Cohen), Jon Weber (of NPR’s “Piano Jazz”), Spencer Day (Billboard & iTunes chart topping jazz singer/songwriter) and Randy Napoleon (Freddy Cole). She’s performed at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Zinc Bar, Iridium, Tomi Jazz, Bosie Tea Parlor, Joe’s Pub, Le Cirque NYC, New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Kristen was named a winner of the NY Jazz Forum Arts Vocal Competition in 2014.
