Folk/blues trio Mother Merey and the Black Dirt are Merey Kimbrough on lead vocals and washboard; Eric Witthans on slide guitar, vocals, and percussion; and Kevin Allen on harmonica and vocals. What began in 2010 as front-porch jam sessions spent trading licks and sipping whiskey quickly turned into late-night juke parties with tube amps humming R.L. Burnside licks, a microphone swinging from the ceiling fan, and law enforcement knocking at the door to shut the whole thing down.

Their self-released debut Down to the River features nine original compositions and two traditional numbers, “John Henry” and “Trouble in Mind.” The album was produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered by Justin Douglas at Shine Studios in Austin, TX.
