Bio

Alice Howe writes and sings a story that is at once her own and that of her audience. It is a core of honest human experience that defines her work, allowing others to find themselves in her songs. In a sense, this may be said to be the truth of folk music, the story told indefinitely of love and loss, joy and sorrow. It is that standard of timelessness to which she rises.

From an early age, Alice was riveted by traditional folk music sung by the revivalists of the 20th century, and found that for her, there would be no substitute for music that cuts plainly to the heart with the simple beauty of good storytelling. When she began writing lyrics at 10 years old, Alice followed her thirst to tell stories, guided by the artists that shaped her musical consciousness. For as long as Alice can remember, songwriting has defined her: it is how she processes her experiences, how she praises the people and places close to her heart, and how she practices self-reflection. As a girl she developed the habit of walking around my neighborhood on rainy nights, singing aloud to herself whatever words and melodies came to mind, and later rushing home to record them. Even now, the rain fills her with the desire to write, transporting her to the cool, humid evenings of memory.
