Moravia has been called the place at the intersection of Eastern and Western European music. The convergence of its disparate elements at the turn of the 20th century created a rich musical tradition that has been cut off by politics and war for generations.

An innovative collaboration between classical musicians, folk musicians and modern dancers, On an Overgrown Path: Dreamscapes, Dances and Love Stories of the European Borderlands, is a concert that revives and exposes these cultural treasures in new arrangements and settings, sharing the melodies of familiar works alongside the folk songs that inspired them and classical works almost entirely unheard in American concert halls today

The program’s name is inspired by an evocative solo piano work by Leos Janacek which draws on the folklore of his native Moravia and his own personal stories. The music includes not only the Janacek melodies that violinist Lucia Conrad heard as a child in her native Prague, but also the evocative story-telling of Janacek’s romantic era predecessors and the vibrant folk and gypsy-inspired works of his contemporaries and successors. The composers on the program include Antonin Dvorak, Frederic Chopin, Henryk Wieniawski, Aram Khachaturian, Mykola Lysenko, Jeno Hubay, Bohuslav Martinu.

The evening begins with Andrei Temkin’s Chervona Bambino trio, featuring Viorel Russo of the Oregon Symphony on viola and Jeff Holt of the Wanderlust Orchestra on upright bass, exploring the region’s folk traditions.

Internationally renowned multi-media performance artist and choreographer Agnieszka Laska has created dance pieces to accompany Lyrical Strings’ original arrangements and The Agnieska Laska Dancers will take the stage at various points in the program.
