What a great old-time musician! Tune in!

Liam was exceptional for ten years old. All those instruments played well, his ability to communicate with the audience, and his willingness to offer something in exchange for others giving him money is a lesson in good business sense. I will be willing to buy another ticket to watch his progress. The Concert Window is also a great idea!

Bio: Liam Purcell is an 11-year-old old-time/bluegrass multi-instrumentalist from Deep Gap, North Carolina. Raised just two-miles down the road from Doc Watson's house, Liam is growing up immersed in old-time Appalachian mountain culture. Though clawhammer banjo and old-time fiddle remains at his core, he has discovered other genres from teachers like Pete Wernick/bluegrass banjo, April Verch/Celtic fiddle, Shane Cook/Canadian fiddle, and Scott Freeman/bluegrass mandolin. Liam plays banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and guitar.

He was an official stage-listed artist at IBMA's Wide Open Bluegrass this year in Raleigh, NC playing a set of old-time music on the Youth Stage. He has performed with Pete Wernick on the Cabin Stage at MerleFest, and played songs on stage with Joe Newberry, Mike Compton, Alice Gerrard and Beverly Smith. He has workshopped with Bruce Molsky, Alan Jabbour, the Kruger Brothers, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops, as well as regional old-time musicians Laura Boosinger, Matt Combs, James Leva, Rick Ward, Jerry Correl, Richard Bowman, Mark Campbell, Kirk Sutphin, Mac Traynham, and John Schwab.

Liam has played with Uwe Krüger, Shane Cook, Hubby Jenkins, Randy Torno, Matthew Weaver, and Jeff Rose of Detour Bluegrass. In addition, he has performed on stage with regional old-time/bluegrass artists Steve Lewis, Scott Freeman, Joe Shannon, Steve Kilby, Mary Greene, and Robby Norris.

He plays dozens of events each year from paid concerts to volunteer fundraisers to dance bands to workshops with the Laurel Creek String Band, Strictly Strings, The Junaluska Wildcats and State Line Jam. He was selected for the past two years to perform on the Youth Stage at Merlefest. He's won multiple blue ribbons at regional fiddle festivals.

Liam seeks out opportunities to play with old-timers in our region from Charlie Glenn to Glenn Bolick. He has been taught at camps by diverse artists including Pete and Joan Wernick, Canadian fiddlers April Verch and Shane Cook, old-time/bluegrass musicians Matt Combs, Steve Lewis and Scott Freeman. He has taken lessons from local old-time artists Cecil Gurganus, Randy Sheets, Debra Jean Sheets, Mark Freed, John Cockman and Erika Testerman.

Liam has attended many workshops and camps including The Black Banjo and Fiddle Gathering, Peach Bottom Fiddle & Strings Camp, and the Pete Wernick Jam Camp. He's played fiddle and banjo for the past two summers in more than 75 performances of the outdoor drama "Horn in the West."

His self-produced CD "Ten and Under" has been featured on Colorado's WGNU's bluegrass show and sold nearly 100 copies. You can order by sending Liam a message on Facebook.

In addition to making music, Liam enjoys horseback riding, drawing, reading, and taking care of animals.
