Sherry Finzer is an international award-winning American flutist and composer. Based in Phoenix, AZ, she performs as a soloist, with her guitarist Darin Mahoney, and other local, national and international musicians. She is known for her variety of musical styles, and she travels nationally and internationally to perform as a Pearl Flute Performing Artist, Guo Flute Performing Artist, and Recording Artist for Heart Dance Records. Musically, Finzer has evolved from a classical, competitive flutist to recording acclaimed new age music albums. Sherry says, “I was drawn to new age music because it helps people with healing and I have learned how much people can be affected in a positive way by music.”
Sherry’s sound is influenced by the different genres of music she plays, by the artists she collaborates with, and by the flutes she uses. She uses various types of flutes to create her pieces, where the sounds of wind instruments are mixed with Gregorian changts, ethereal sounds, and other ethnic instruments to create a relaxing experience. In live performances, she mixes electronic and ethnic sounds without breaking the peace and calm that characterize its parts. She has also used Eastern scales and melodies to evoke an air of mystery and intrigue. Reviewers have described her playing as “deeply haunting…calms and yet piques the senses.”
Altogether she has recorded 11 CD’s, her latest, Sanctuary III: Beyond the Dream. Last year's collaboration with guitarist Darin Mahoney won One World Music Best Album of 2013. Finzer recently performed onstage with Clay Aiken at one of his Joyful Noise concerts. For her contributions to the genre of flute music, she was a semi-finalist for a Grammy award nomination in 2010, 2012 and 2013. In addition to her work as an artist, Finzer is also the founder and president of the local non-profit Arizona World Music Initiative, and offers private lessons at her studio in Phoenix. In 2014, Sherry became a member of Fiona Joy's Blue Dream Ensemble, which tours internationally. Her solo albums Sanctuary, Sanctuary II: Earth, Sanctuary III: Beyond the Dream, Transformation, Desert Journey, Someone like Me, Masquerade and Radiant Sky are available as a CD or as digital downloads, and can be purchased at a variety of online music sales sites including CDBaby, Amazon, and iTunes. More information about Sherry is available on her website: sherryfinzer.com.
Finzer grew up in upstate New York and performed in bands throughout her school years. In addition to studying with her long-time teacher, Glennda Dove-Pellito, she also took lessons and masterclasses with many talented flutists, including Goran Marcusson, Dr. Bradley Garner, Nestor Torres, Michel DeBost, Mimi Stillman, Brian Luce, Jill Felber, Claudia Anderson and Leone Buyse. Sherry performed with the Brockport and Greece Symphony Orchestras and won many top flute competitions. After moving to Phoenix in 2005, Sherry started delving into other genres of music: world, flamenco, jazz, new age, pop, and rock, and listening to new age musicians such as Nicholas Gunn, Dean Evenson and Suzanne Ciani. She has since performed with a wide variety of groups (Radiant Sky, dulce VAS, the Central Arizona Flute Ensemble, Azzmenco, Trillium Flute Trio, and Desert Echoes Flute Project) and musicians (harpist VeeRonna Ragone, guitarists Ric Flauding, John Calvert, Pete Gitlin, Pedro Perez, and Drew Diego Bennett).
Today, she travels extensively as an in-demand new age musician. As she performs solo and with other musicians, she keeps her mind set on why music is so important: “music symbolizes the different choices and opportunities we have in life,” explains Finzer. “It is important to overcome fear, open the next door and step through.” As for Finzer’s next step? She will be embarking on a limited-engagement tour with Australian pianist Fiona Joy in the coming year with concerts planned for Albuquerque, Sedona, Phoenix, Tucson, and in the fall of 2015 throughout Australia.Sherry will also be touring and recording with Native American flutist Mark Holland in the spring of 2015.
