NEMES is neither feline nor foe and is pronounced like “knee•miss.” The origin of the band’s name is unknown, as all four members will tell you a different story, but Nemes’ history is rich. According to Chris Anthony (Drums/Percussion), the band started “around 2,000 years ago” when he and his brother Dave Anthony (Vocals/Guitar) began playing music in their parents’ basement. Ask Dave for his biggest inspiration and he will either tell you about former-best-friend-and-beagle Lincoln (the first living thing to hear most of his songs) or the first time his father showed him Nirvana. Josh Knowles (Vocals/Violin) joined the group after Chris and Dave overheard him singing in the showers of their high school gym and the group quickly became known for its dual lead vocalists. Former tour-mate Alex Glover (Bass/Vocals) came on board in 2012 and Nemes was born. The band has developed interwoven distinct songwriting with three part harmony making seamless transitions between arena-sized rock songs and violin-plucking ballads with no lapse in emotion or intensity.

Nemes has been described as somewhat of a strange threesome between Mumford & Sons, Foo Fighters, and The Black Keys, pushing every side of the alternative rock/indie spectrum. Under the Gun Review writes, “ no groups are capable of producing a sound similar to Nemes,” which is perhaps due to Knowles’ unique inclusion of violin playing, influenced by equal parts Jascha Heifetz and Jimmy Page. The group has been recognized by the Alternative Press as one of the top 5 unsigned bands in the country, and nominated for several New England Music Awards in 2012 and 2013 alongside fellow Massachusetts acts Bad Rabbits and Boys Like Girls.

The band spent the better part of 2013 preparing their full length studio debut, “I Carry Your Heart,” due out this spring (2014). After recording their “5 Minutes EP” live with Grammy-winning producer Ducky Carlisle, Nemes launched a successful Kickstarter campaign. Pledgers of the campaign were rewarded with a copy of the EP and a limited pressing was sold out in partnership with Antique Records. “I Carry Your Heart” is what the band sees as their defining statement, a culmination of years spent playing everywhere from the subways of Boston to hundreds of shows in the northeast. During a trip to South by Southwest the band was spontaneously asked to open for pop singer Dev after playing to a club owner for free drinks and food.

Nemes has gained experience performing in front of sold out crowds at historic venues Club Passim and Bull Run. They have supported several national acts including Rusted Root, Vanna, and The Ataris. The band is “antsy in their pantsies” (their words) to be back on the road this summer (2014) personally bringing “I Carry Your Heart” to cities across the country.
Since being named one of Alternative Press' top 5 unsigned bands in 2010, Nemes has embarked on multiple tours of the Eastern US, self-produced and released an album entitled "Don't Flush Me" in 2012, achieved viral success with their interpretation of Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box", and most recently released a live acoustic EP entitled "Five Minutes" which showcases uniquely intimate arrangements of songs which will be featured on their first studio full-length album, "I Carry Your Heart", due out in early 2014.

The bottom line is that Nemes is motivated, capable, and ready to take on any audience put in front of them.
