As Devin gets warmed up, the Barn Dance was the best!

What was your favorite part of the performance? That they were at home and it was real. Great music and musicians. Better lighting and sound would be nice. But loved it as it was.

Loved when you gave us background information about songs and told us the story behind your learning them -- really adds context that music alone doesn't provide.

Marta's music reflects a special interest in extending the sound palette and technical language of harps large and small to translate inspiration from great pipers, fiddlers and singers of the past and present. She is particularly inspired by the traditional music legacies of her homes, Chicago and New York.
Having won a senior All-Ireland title at the age of 19, in recent years Marta has traveled extensively, performing and teaching throughout Europe and North America. Highlights include the World Harp Congress, the Spoleto Festival, Paris' Espace Culturel Bertin Poirée, and every major North American harp festival. Marta is also an improviser and studio musician; her playing has featured on many recordings, notably psychedelic pop group of Montreal's 2011 release Paralytic Stalks, as well as Songs of Joy and Peace, Yo-Yo Ma's 2010 double GRAMMY-winning album. She is an exclusive sponsored artist of William Rees Instruments.
Marta is also a longtime teacher and coach. She's taught everyone from beginners of all ages to multiple All-Ireland prizewinners and the legendary harpist Deborah Henson-Conant (who coached intensively with Marta for DHC's collaboration with guitar virtuoso Steve Vai on his 2012 Story of Light tour.) Her own training is greatly indebted to Sarah Bullen and Máire Ní Chathasaigh, as well as many, many musicians in Chicago and New York.

Devin Shepherd is a fiddler from Chicago. He began violin lessons at age four, but fell in love with traditional Irish music at ten. His mother nurtured his interest, immersing him in the deep-rooted Irish music scene of his hometown. Devin studied formally with Kathleen Keane and Liz Carroll, and was awarded an Illinois Arts Council Master-Apprentice grant to study with Liz at age 12. Aside from lessons, Devin absorbed much of the style and repertoire of Chicago during his many years playing with expert Irish and Irish-American bearers of the tradition such as Phil Durkin, Frank Burke, Albert Neary, Pat Cloonan, Una McGloo, and many more. As a young fiddler, Devin won first prize in the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil traditional Irish music competition for nine consecutive years. Since 2000, he has made his living teaching and performing Irish music throughout the U.S. and abroad. His diverse performance venues include the New York New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the Paris Olympia theater in Paris, France. He is a member of the Chicago-based ensemble Bua, and a former member of Chicago Reel. Devin has a degree in music composition from the Chicago College of Performing Arts.
