The idea for the Trad Youth Exchange Program was hatched a few years ago
by Mary MacNamara from Tulla & Lisa Coyne from Boston.

Lisa had been noticing that most of the students in the CCE Boston Music School were adults, the few children didn't know each other well, & there was no "scene" or communitiy around the music for them. A short time later, she happened to meet Mary after one of her workshop gigs at The Button Box in Sunderland, MA. As they got to know each other over the years, Lisa was amazed at Mary's role in teaching the kids in Tulla: she has developed an incredible scene, where kids & families are knit together by the music. This music is about so much more than just tunes -- it is about connection, & culture, & friendship. It is about having a common language, about playing together, about fun. Lisa wanted to help build that here. And exchange program seem like it could be a big part. The two women batted the idea around a few years, & finally decided to make a go of it!

The goal of this exchange are to build friendships & understanding between the American & Irish kids. They are in the process of learning some of each other's tunes, so they'll have a common repertoire of about 30 sets. They'll not just have their common tunes, they'll also experience each other's settings of different tunes. They'll share culture as well, & build relationships that we hope will last a lifetime.

Here in the U.S., Lisa heads up the Exchange, with help from Sean Clohessy, Chris Stevens, Kathleen Conneely, Patrick Hutchinson (who transcribed all the tunes for us!), & Jimmy Noonan. The majority of the kids are in the Boston Music School's Realta Geala (Bright Stars) youth ensemble, but there are also a few young musicians from New York & Philadelphia taking part in the exchange. Whether at home or during Realta Geala, they're working hard to learn their tunes. In November the kids from Tulla will arrive for a five-day whirlwind of rehearsals & concerts & tourism & fun. In February, they host us for the same in Tulla. It's a huge undertaking not only to host the Ireland group here, but for our group to travel there! So of course besides learning tunes, we're doing our best to raise some funds to help defray costs for the families. You can help support the growth of Irish culture & music here in the United States
