Yoyo Tuki

Is a musician and visionary artist from Rapa Nui (the Polynesian name for Easter Island).

Isolated Rapa Nui lies 3.700 kms off the coast of Chile, and 4.000 kms south-east from Tahiti. Being a dependant of Chile, the official language is Spanish (the only Spanish-speaking Polynesian Island) though the Islanders also speak ‘Rapa Nui’ – a Polynesian dialect similar to Tahitian and New Zealand Maori.

On the 10th of April 1983, Yoyo Tuki was born into the culturally rich environment of his Rapa Nui roots. Coming from a large Islander family, Yoyo was constantly exposed to his Rapa Nui heritage. From his native language, to the history of his people, to the arts of music, carving and painting - Yoyo’s cultural roots have become integral parts of his character, and have largely defined him into the musician and artist he is today.

Yoyo´s music, which is sung predominantly in his native Rapa Nui tongue, has gathered a worldwide following, which seems to steadily keep growing. It has been described as Soulful, emotive, spiritual, with contagious rhythms and melodies, but above all ”Honest”. His “long awaited” most recent album ‘Hoko Manu’ has caused quite a sensation in his island home since its’ release in January 2011.

At 30 years old, Yoyo talks about himself as a Rapa Nui musician/artist, who is constantly guided by the ‘Kuhane o te Tupuna’, ‘The spirit of his ancestors’. For him, his music and his art are deeply intertwined. They are essential parts of his being and without either of them; he wouldn’t feel whole (complete). He spends his time as a dedicated musician, while doing his art on the side.

The inspiration for his work comes from the natural environment, life experiences, his Rapa Nui heritage and the wisdom and philosophies within ancient people and civilizations.

Currently, he shares his time between the two tiny Islands of Rapa Nui (Chile) and Norfolk Island (Australia), as his wife Natalie is a proud Norfolk Islander and descendant of the Bounty Mutineers and their Tahitian wives.
