LINDA MCRAE – BIOGRAPHY

“Skydiggers record covers of great Canadian artists Gordon Lightfoot, Ron Sexsmith, Linda McRae and Neil Young.”
(Montreal Gazette, Metro Winnipeg, Nova Scotia Herald, Post Media News July 2013)

Rough Edges & Ragged Hearts Linda McRae’s highly anticipated fourth solo release doesn’t describe the gold and platinum polish enhancing a musical career spanning 25 years. Recently nominated for Contemporary Album of the Year by the Canadian Folk Music Awards and being included on the Skydiggers new recording of Canadian covers confirms Linda’s maturing distinction as a quality songwriter and recording artist.

Linda’s new recording reached #1 at CKUA Radio, #4 in the Folk DJ’s list of Top Canadian Albums, #1 & 2 Top Canadian Songs for Rough Edges & Ragged Hearts and Be Your Own Light and #8 in Top Canadian Artists. Since it’s US release in November 2012, it has been on the Roots Music Reports Charts for 40 straight weeks, mostly in the Top 20!

Produced by Marc L’Esperance her new recording features performances by Marc, Gurf Morlix, Doug Cox, Ray Bonneville, Stephen Nikleva, Samantha Parton (The Be Good Tanyas), and The Sojourners.

Linda earned a Juno nomination and double Platinum, triple Gold recording status as bassist and accordionist with Celtic/Roots group Spirit of the West. Departing the band after eight years she resumed her solo career consecutively producing three critically acclaimed recordings: Flying Jenny, producer Colin Linden (Bruce Cockburn, Emmy Lou Harris), Cryin’ Out Loud, producer Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams, Mary Gauthier) and Carve It To The Heart producers Marc L’Esperance (Po’ Girl, Headwater).

Performing on clawhammer banjo, acoustic guitar, accordion and porchboard stompbox, Linda combines old-time sounds with universal themes of heartbreak & redemption offering an intriguing sepia postcard from the past that is vibrant and alive in the present. Recordings and performances with musical luminaries include Bruce Cockburn, Neko Case, Alejandro Escovedo, Gurf Morlix, and Ray Waylie Hubbard.

Recent performance highlights include The Carter Family Fold, VA, The Hank Williams Museum, AL, Barbican Theatre, UK, Maverick Festival, UK and New Folsom Prison, California’s infamous maximum-security prison performing in concert and facilitating creative writing workshops for the inmates. The concert and workshops permitted inmates freedom of expression while giving Linda a rare opportunity to assist in that expression. It has also lead to the creation of her new EXPRESS YOURSELF!!! Creative Writing Workshops now being presented throughout North America to disenfranchised youth and adults.
