An evening of soul stirring, passionate music from Galicia – performed by a troupe of West Coast folk musicians led by Master Cano Cadarso from Santiago de Compostela.

This evening of music and dance is the culmination of a week of intensive study with master teacher ‘Cano’ Cadarso, over from Galicia. Muiñeiras, Xotas, Foliadas, Golpes, and Alalás will be sung, danced and played on gaitas ( pipes) requintas ( flutes) bombos .tambors and pandeiretas (percussion). zanfona ( hurdy gurdy), fiddles and mandolins. In addition to Galician tunes new and centuries old , we will hear songs from the rich repertoire of Galician folksong, including some taken from Florencio dos Vilares, famous blind street fiddler and legendary player from a tradition that is centuries old. The music will be played in various combinations of instruments, from duos and trios to the large and thrilling massed pipe band.

The Association of Gaiteiros Californios is a wild coalition of musicians dedicated to the music of Galicia – the green, mysterious, ancient northwesternmost province of Spain. In Galicia bagpipes have been played for over a thousand years, and traditional music is a part of everyday life, its rhythms woven into the language and architecture, and its songs sung everywhere. In Galicia, one in 26 people can play the native bagpipe, the Gaita!

Musicians include some of the West Coast’s most experienced folk players, including members of the Brunos, Jim Oakden, Ian Law, and Kevin Carr of Wake the Dead.
