When asked to describe her sound, singer-songwriter Dana Carmel ponders the question for a moment and replies: “If Regina Spektor and Pearl Jam had a music baby, it would be me.” Dana has always been drawn to catchy melodies, thought-provoking lyrics and passionate delivery. If you’ve ever heard one of Dana’s songs or caught her live, you get it.

Since deciding to switch majors at NYU from psych to music, Dana has been exploring her own methods of crafting songs on guitar and piano. Her songs draw from her formal musical training but also document her own experiences in life and love (yes ex-boyfriends, those lyrics may be about you!).

“I try to sing about universal topics. Feeling lonely, feeling unsure of your purpose, love, (unrequited and requited), fear …all the things that people feel but sometimes don’t want to admit or don’t have a way to express. I feel very lucky to have my music as an outlet and want to be the voice for those that don’t have one,” Dana explains.

After years of playing the local clubs, including CBGB before it closed (RIP), she moved to San Francisco and immersed herself in its often vibrant, sometimes wacky, always interesting music scene. This meant the usual club/open mic circuit, but she also worked with insanely talented musicians such as Jon Evans (Tori Amos) and Julie Wolf (Ani DiFranco). She took intensive song-writing workshops with well-renowned songwriter Bonnie Hayes (Bonnie Raitt, Natalie Cole, Bette Midler). She says, “I don’t ever want to feel like I know it all already. There is always more to learn.” Hayes was the producer on Dana’s first EP, “The Difference” which was released in 2008 to local critical acclaim. The tracks explore that universal (and too often experienced) theme, unrequited love, through funky pop tracks and darker, slower-tempo tunes.

In 2011 Dana began working on her next album with Jon Evans producing. Released in May of 2012, “Validity” continues Dana’s exploration of love, expanding her repertoire of sounds, tempos and instruments. There is a maturity to the sound that Dana had been looking for and found with Evans. From rock songs like “Shoulda Coulda Woulda” to the slow-tempo “Wait For Me”, Validity’s unique sound gives a lot of emotion and diversity to the listener.

Dana is not one to sit on her backside and do nothing and she’s definitely proving to her fans in 2012/2013 that she’s no slouch. In the summer of 2012 she launched her Song in Your Box project. She is writing a song a week for an entire year, emailing her fans the songs no matter what shape they’re in. That’s 52 songs. One every week without excuses. “Song in Your Box is all about pushing myself beyond my comfort level, trying new things, not being afraid to stumble and hopefully inspiring others to do the same, ” Dana says. “Some weeks, the songs come so easily, sometimes I feel like ‘what am I doing? I’ve got nothing this week, this is insane.’ But I love the challenge and I am really learning about myself and my musical process.”

Now back in New York, Dana is concentrating on making more music and letting the unique energy of the city influence her newest songs. The project provides a great focus and she is inspiring fans by finding new topics to sing about each week. You can catch her performing around New York or online at one of her popular webcasts.
