Bio:

Likened to one of Homer's Sirens, Kendra McKinley sings with a voice that has the ability to bring even the rowdiest crowd to a standstill. A seasoned jazz guitarist and pianist, McKinley, 23, combines the sophistication of Tin Pan Alley melodies, the harmonic sensibilities of 1960s psychedelic chamber pop, and the seductive calm of Bossa Nova jazz to create intoxicating compositions guaranteed to excite a wide range of listeners. Now collaborating with an ensemble of seasoned instrumentalists, McKinley’s colorful compositions have been complemented by rich vocal harmony and lively rhythms making for a truly unforgettable musical experience.

Born and raised in Aptos, Calif. to a family of artists who revered The Beatles and Joni Mitchell as saints, Kendra was surrounded by music at a young age. Kendra acted in various musicals throughout her childhood and learned to play guitar at age 11 (her first song was “Ripple” by the Grateful Dead). She started writing music her senior year of high school, playing her first show at a small Soquel, Calif. coffee shop the summer before her freshman year at UC Santa Cruz.

Kendra received her Bachelor of Arts in Music at the university, specializing in classical guitar. The rigorous program sharpened Kendra’s already naturally developed ear, provided her extensive musicianship tools, expanded her vocabulary and deepened her understanding of music. It was during this time that she began exploring the piano as a second instrument.

Kendra’s first full-length album "Chestnut Street," eight tracks featuring all original work, was recorded at UCSC’s Kresge Town Hall, relying on the venue’s acoustics for natural reverb.
Having recently moved to San Francisco, McKinley is thrilled to be a part of the Bay Area music scene.

"With a mesmerizing voice that floats somewhere between Amy Winehouse and Zooey Deschanel, the 21-year-old songbird is like a She without a Him. Add an acoustic guitar and looping effects to the mix, and her vibrato really soars. This is one rising star you don’t want to miss."
— DNA, Goodtimes

"Like a seasoned musician twice her age, McKinley sings with a sultry voice that soars high into delicate peaks, climbing and dipping with the twang of exotic, steely chords resonating from her acoustic guitar."
Joel Hersch - Goodtimes
